The historic Critérium du Dauphiné is renamed, handing its title to its host region —for many years now its mainstay and main sponsor, and one that long ago reshaped the route concept: more of the Massif Central, less dominance of the Alps and the old geographic Dauphiné.
On the sporting side, a fairly demanding first day, with 3,000 metres of climbing and five categorised ascents: Arzelier (Cat. 2), Seyssins (Cat. 3), Quaix-en-Chartreuse (Cat. 2), Vence (Cat. 2) and above all Rousset (Cat. 1, 8.2 km at 7.6%), crested some twenty kilometres from the finish. We'll see how much the bunch splits and regroups.
